Oil for decking and exterior timber

Exterior wood is exposed to water, sunlight, dirt and repeated wet-dry cycles. Decking oil should be chosen for the timber species, previous treatment, exposure and maintenance expectations. No exterior oil is maintenance-free.

Preparation matters

• Allow new or weathered timber to reach a suitable moisture level.

• Remove algae, dirt, loose fibres and incompatible old coatings.

• Sand rough or glazed areas so absorption is even.

• Test colour and absorption on the actual boards.

• Apply only in suitable weather and avoid rain or dew during early drying.

Use thin, controlled coats. Pools of oil between boards or on dense timber can remain sticky. End grain and cut edges often need particular attention.

Seasonal maintenance

Inspect the surface at least annually and clean it with a compatible method. Horizontal surfaces and exposed edges normally need more frequent care than sheltered vertical timber. Refresh before the surface becomes grey, cracked or water-absorbent.

Can decking oil stop wood from turning grey forever?

No. UV and weathering continue to affect exterior wood. Pigmented finishes and regular maintenance can slow the process.

Can I oil wet decking?

No. Timber should be suitably dry and the forecast should allow safe application and drying.

How often should decking be re-oiled?

It depends on exposure, species, colour and use. Inspect annually and maintain when water resistance and colour begin to decline.
